The sciatic nerves branch off of the |spinal cord| between the fourth lumbar and third sacral |vertebrae|. They extend down the legs, innervating the hamstrings, and branch into the tibial and peroneal ~nerves~ which innervate the lower leg. Inflammation of the sciatic nerve, a condition known as sciatica, is a common problem among the elderly.
